Preschool Opportunities

Help prepare your child for kindergarten by enrolling them in a quality preschool program. 

Preschool programs are provided by Alleghany Highlands Public Schools to eligible 3- and 4-year-old children residing within Alleghany County and the City of Covington. Classrooms are staffed by certified teachers and instructional assistants. Bus transportation, as well as breakfast and lunch meals are provided at no cost.

The Alleghany Highlands Public School system offers the following preschool programs:

  • PreK VPI Program: The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) is a state-funded school and community-based program that provides quality preschool programs for 4-year-old children unserved by the federal Head Start program.  Acceptance to this program is not guaranteed, and all students must apply for entrance.  Click the Smart2Start link to begin the application process.
  • IPOP Program: IPOP classrooms serve 3- and 4-year-old children with special needs and their typically developing 4-year-old peers in a reverse inclusion setting.  For more information or to register your child, contact the elementary school located in the district in which you reside.

  • The Alleghany Highlands YMCA Early Learning Centers provide a high quality early learning experience for children birth to age 5. The Centers also provide quality after school and summer camp services for children age 5 to 12 years old.

  • Early Learning Center Classrooms Provide:
    • Qualified staff providing intentional teaching using the STREAMin3 curriculum in a licensed early learning center. 

    • Provide breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack daily.  All meals meet USDA guidelines.

    • Partner with Early Head Start to provide services for children ages 18 months through 3 years old.

    • Provide child-centered activities which stimulate cognitive, emotional, and social development.

    • Open year round Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

    • Tuition based scholarships available for those who wish to apply and are qualified.

    • The YMCA Early Learning Centers accept Virginia Child Care Subsidy.  Please contact the Alleghany/Covington Department of Social Services to apply.

  • The Early Learning Centers offer summer camp programs for children ages 5 to 12 years of age.  Call the Early Learning Centers for more information.
